Join a walk through the area with experienced, professional tourist guide Mary Kemp Clarke.
Founded in the 15th century, the village has grown organically around its harbour and encompasses a wealth of fascinating historical and archaeological detail and social history.
The walks will take around one and a half hours
They will begin and end at Newhaven harbour.
They will take in interesting architecture and noteworthy landmarks, and Mary will supply a wealth of detail about local and international connections to the picturesque village.
Learn about links with the Canadian Goldrush and the Spanish Armada, the early days of photography, shipbuilding and fishing, as you pass the old fish market and the lighthouse, the oldest working public Victorian school in Edinburgh and the last of the tenements and fishermen’s cottages.
Newhaven has always had a strong sense of community and the present community is working hard to save the old Victorian primary school building which you will see on the walk, when its pupils move on to a brand new school. It is hoped to purchase the old school and give it a new lease of life as a community hub containing a Newhaven and Victorian Education museum as well as versatile spaces for inter-generational community use.
Walks will take place on May 20th and 21st, June 6th and 28th and August 7th and 9th.
Mainly flat terrain but with some cobbles. Meet Mary at the harbour at 2 p.m. To book in advance, email email@example.com with Newhaven Walk in the title line.
