Newhaven Community Choir
Have you heard the ballads of the Newhaven Fishwife Choir? In the 19th and early 20th centuries, local ‘fishwives’ went door to door in Edinburgh neighbourhoods selling the days’ catch, which they had earlier cleaned and prepared. As they worked, they sang songs of our fishing heritage. These traditional songs became so popular that the Newhaven Fishwife Choir travelled the UK selling out venues such as town halls.
Now, the Newhaven Community Choir is recreating some of these ballads to reflect the change in our relationship with the sea and the species lost from the Forth.
Hear their songs at the Edinburgh Shoreline exhibition from 28 July – 23 September. Keep an eye on our updates page to see how the project progresses.
