Event Details

The Forth Rivers Trust have kindly agreed to deliver RiverFly training on the Brunstane Burn. This training workshop will last for approximately 4 hours, and will teach you all you need to know to survey invertebrates on burn. Invertebrate populations are linked to river health, meaning that a programme of monitoring invertebrates in future will give us an indication of decline or improvement in the water quality.

The Brunstane Burn runs out into the Firth of Forth, and in recent years water quality in the Portobello and Musselburgh areas of the Forth has slipped into the ‘poor’ category.

We are offering this opportunity to local residents who are keen to learn these skills and would be willing to give up their time regularly (once per month or once every two months) to help our team continue monitoring the health of the Burn.

There are four places available on this workshop. To book your free ticket visit:

This event will be outdoors, so please dress for the weather and bring lunch and a drink with you. We will be required to get into the burn, so you will need to bring long knee-length wellies with you. Full waders or wet suit are not required. All other equipment such as nets are provided.

We will be training within the Donkeyfield Community Orchard, just off Brunstane Road South, Portobello.

We understand that sometimes other things come up and attendees can no longer make an event. On this occasion training is costing the project £50 per person, so if you do need to cancel please can we ask that you do so as soon as is reasonably possible in order that we can offer your place to someone else.
