I look after a children’s art club at Edinburgh Central Libraries for children aged 8 – 12. I chose the species for them – because of time as we don’t have very long for the sessions – but I wanted to pick something that might immediately sit in their imaginations. We discussed whales, and the humpback whale in particular, and we watched a little of a David Attenborough documentary. The children then designed their whale shapes and cut out their stencils. We used a printmaker’s dolly to print with, and lots of household objects; old toys; vegetables; and offcuts of material, to explore what the texture of their whales might feel like.
