Disappearing Words

Our coasts have always had their own language — words shaped by tides, weather, wildlife, work and generations of people living alongside the sea. Some of these words are now slipping from everyday use. They name things we can still see, hear and experience, but which we may no longer know how to describe.

We’ve gathered a collection of disappearing marine and coastal words that we think deserve another life. Some are practical, some poetic, some wonderfully specific. Together, they carry knowledge, stories and ways of noticing the natural world that are worth holding on to.
