The kelp fly is one of those overlooked species that doesn’t look particularly cute but has a vital role in the shore line ecosystem. While reading about this fly I learned its life cycle and how during its short life they are a vital food source for birds while also breaking down and turning over organic material on the shore line.
In my piece of art I printed a photo of seaweed on to fabric then embroidered the life cycle of the kelp fly on to tulle fabric and layered it on top. I used cotton, tulle and cotton embroidery thread.
