I am interested in the beautiful shapes and patterns made by seaweeds, and I thought that the Knotted Wrack had potential to be used in an artwork, specifically an artist’s book.
I learned about the products which can be made when harvesting this marine algae, including one which I use regularly – Gaviscon – for indigestion. One of the ingredients in Gaviscon is derived from processing ascphyllum nodosum to create sodium alginate.
I used a children’s board book, stripped of its page coverings to make the substrate. Recycled brown paper to print on to form the content of the book. More brown paper to create a frame for a sample of knotted wrack which is contained within the book. Stencils for artwork. It is 19 cm x 15 cm x 2 cm.
Susan has kindly put together this little ‘Zine’ demonstrating how to make your own Sailors Whistle. Give it a go next time you are at the beach!
