I wanted to celebrate this species, firstly because I love crabs in general and find them underloved as animals; secondly because this particular species is singled out as being aggressive. I think this is rich coming from humans, to be honest, especially because these crabs are viewed as “good for the table” – who wouldn’t fight back when their lives are at stake? I also love the idea of these crabs swimming around in the water, a different way of travel than is commonly thought of for side-stepping sea-bed dwellers. And then, of course, are the amazing red eyes. What a fabulous animal! The material I used to make my piece is the written word.
