Edinburgh Shoreline recently spent a fantastic morning with the Eco Team from Fox Covert Primary School, exploring the coastline at Cramond and discovering the incredible biodiversity that can be found where land meets sea.
Our adventure began in the wildflower meadows, where the children searched for pollinators, identified native plants and learned about the important role these habitats play in supporting wildlife. From buzzing insects to colourful flowers, there was plenty to spot and lots of curiosity from the group.
We then made our way down to the shoreline to investigate the tide line. Armed with keen eyes and plenty of enthusiasm, the children explored the natural treasures washed ashore by the tide. Along the way they discovered shells, seaweed, feathers, coal, crab remains and other fascinating clues about the wildlife that calls the Firth of Forth home.
One of the highlights of the day was seeing the children proudly share their special finds with one another. Every discovery sparked new questions and conversations about where it came from, what it might tell us about the coast, and why it’s important to protect these habitats for the future.
As part of the visit, each child also chose a coastal species that had captured their interest. Over the last few weeks of school before summer they’ll be finding out more about its lifecycle, habitat and the challenges it faces, before using their research to create their own illustrated zines. These creative pieces will help bring the stories of local wildlife to life while encouraging the children to think about how we can all help protect the biodiversity of the Firth of Forth.
Spending time outdoors, connecting with nature and encouraging young people to explore their local coastline is a key part of Edinburgh Shoreline’s work. It was inspiring to see the Eco Team’s enthusiasm for wildlife and their eagerness to learn more about the rich biodiversity on their doorstep.
